Wah, new species of caterpillar, I like it! Which part of Bukit Timah did you find the caterpillar.
As for the flash position, need some trial and error unless got pros here willing to share their secrets. But did you use a direct flash? Maybe can try pointing the flash upwards. Err......let the pros advise please.

steve guru can get such superb pix with just onboard flash.... we like so extra with external flash...still must consider angle lah...diffuser lah....and also the flash settings....wahahahhaa
dunno are we trying to make our life more difficult by using more complex equipment....
maybe someone can enlighten me?

The on board flash on your cam can also do the trick.. but like everything else.. you need to know your equipment well to fully utilizes it to the max. Different angle yield different shadow results.. and brightness to the subject for that matter.. now we are all talking about insects.. even if we change the subject to a model shoot.. we still have the basics to worry about..no? Hence .. like Steve said.. practice practice and practice...
