Hi all, Interested to widen my scoop beside my default the kit lens. Currently aiming for the 50mm f1.8 coz heard good review about it. Good for low lights (Not u, Lowlight!) & cheap (impt factor!)
Any good recommendation for tele lens?
Btw, any outings lately coz wana learn more from each other.

Hi Nagamisan I recently bought the abovementioned lens abt one month ago. It's a very good lens and quality wise not much diff from the 50mm f1.4. It's dirt cheap and for something that cheap and good what is ther to complain abt unless u want to upgrade. But I don't thk I'll upgrade for the moment as quite happy with it. If I do upgrade I get the f1.2

Yup .. the 50 f/1.8 is a real value for money lens.. but if money permits go for the 50 f/1.4. Keeping in mind that your cam has a 1.6 crop factor so effectively using a 50mm will become a 80mm.
If you want a 50mm range on a 1.6 crop cam .. then you need to get a 35mm lens which will equates to 56mm

50 f/1.8 is abit slow in focusing and sometimes have difficulty focusing in lowlight. If you don't shoot model on fashion runway or wedding banquet then its ok. Not that it cannot perform, just that its harder and slower. F/1.4 50mm is using USM. Tele - 24-105mm F4 L can consider. Am also considering 24-105mm.

if 105mm not long enough for you... can consider 70-200mm

How about the Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro? It is cheap and pretty good performance.

I'd go for Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 HSM About walkaround lens, prefer Canon 24-70 2.8

Thanks for the comments... Xmen & Lowlight: interested in shooting portraits & tinking of getting it to try out since cheap & good. The f1.4 got to kiv for the time being.
Evershine: Mostly for walkabout since i dun want to miss those shoots that needs zooming. Let me know when u have the 24-105mm.
Aloy: Can also consider the Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro? How much will it be?
erolagnab: 24-70 2.8, hmm.... will keep that in my consideration
Ang: $1650... that is way too exp... Newbie here
Deswitch: it is mostly for walk about but i luv to travel & would luv to take pics of the places i been to. So hopefully can cover the basic range, abit on the wide angle shot & those street shots. Thus, i think the 50mm f1.8 can take some nice portraits but still learning.

Bro, if interest is in portrait .. then yes I think you made the right choice.. for portrait the preferred lens is a 85mm.. hence on a 1.6 crop camera .. the 50mm would serve you well.
As for a walk about lens.. go for the 24-105 f4.. this is now (for me) the king of walk around.. but 24*1.6=38.4mm this is a bit narrow for wide angle usage .. but idea for photojournalist shooting.. at the long end 105*1.6=168.. nobody would argue that it too long.
I use to have very great interest in the 24-70 f2.8 but after many testing of different copy.. I alway find this len on the soft side..
Another to consider is the Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS and the TAMRON AF 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 XR DI VC LD Aspherical [IF] Macro .. the Tamron should be going for about $800 plus but it's has not landed in S'pore yet to my knowledge..
That said there is no review of the performace for these 2 lenses yet.. I personally is very keen on the Tamron for it's range.. But Sigma has alway been a better brand..

50mm f1.8 is a good lens to kick start everything.... for me i used to that + close up lens or Raynox to shoot macro also (cos dun want to invest in a macro lens as yet.... ) that also can be used just to snap around.... i also got the SIGMA 18-200, which i'm using most of the time besides my 50mm, the kits lens i still use it once a while.... But one thing is that sometimes for the SIGMA one, the MF would be a bit out leh...AF is still allright, and the outcome sometimes is not as sharp as i like it to be....but since is a cheap lens so not much to expect also....but overall this lens is okie and the range is useful for wide or telephoto!! maybe you got chance to try this len to see if you like it then consider buying...or if got any gathering over here and we do meet up, i can let you try it.... am sure many others here also provide you chance to try lens hehe

With the 50mm f1.8 you can do Extreme Macro Photography by do the "reverse mount".
Beside the 24-105 f4L, 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS is also a good and cheaper walk around lens. I can bring the 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS during kopi session.
