The EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM Lens is Canon's first Image Stabilized lens introduced in 1995.
Since then, different generations of IS lenses have been developed. Currently, we have the 4th generation IS lenses which allows the users to handheld 4 stops faster.
Some of the lenses have two IS modes, i.e. Mode 1 and 2.
Mode 1 works both in vertical and horizontal direction, while Mode 2 works only in vertical direction; it doesn't counter balance the horizontal shake. The Mode 2 is necessary for panning. If you follow a subject with a slow shutter speed, IS mode 1 tries to counter balance the motion, by moving the image in the opposite direction of your movement - the result may be loss of sharpness. Mode 2 instead correct only the vertical movements, so you are free to follow the subject.
Therfore, use Mode 2 for moving subjects, while Mode 1 works well for static subjects when the camera is in landscape format, i.e. with horizontal framing. However, if the camera is in portrait format, i.e. vertical framing, Mode 1 is the only choice.
In 2011, Canon unleahed the new super telephoto lenses namely the EF 300mm f2.8L IS USM II, EF 400mm f2.8L IS USM II, EF 500mm f4L IS USM II and EF 600mm f4L IS USM II. One of the characteristics of these super telephoto lenses is the incorporation of IS mode 3.
Basically, Mode 3 takes the benefits of standard IS (effective for both horizontal and vertical camera motion) but, instead of it being active all the time, it only activates when you fully press the shutter button to take an image. It is especially useful for sports photography where you are likely to be moving between subjects quickly.
In Mode 1, IS can create a bump or jump within the viewfinder as the IS motor races to keep up with extensive lens movements. Instead, by not activating until the shutter button is fully pressed it saves the system trying to compensate for random, rapid lens motion and only compensates at the point you are taking an image.
