Good news to those who want a ring flash for macro photography. After uncountable faliures in my experiments, I found a cheap way to improve lighting for macro photography.
I found a round florescent tube (about 6 inch diameter) that runs on 12V DC. This is actually a car acessories. I took out the housing and did a very simple experiment. Set cam to Av mode. at f2.8.
Aim camera at subject in a very dim area... Shutter speed reading was 0.3 sec. Den i turn "ON" the ring light.. Viola reading is now 1/60sec.. thats about 8 stops.
Now to complete my setup, I need a portable battery pack. which would be better, a 12V motocycle battery or 8x "D" size rechargable batteries?
This experiment will continue after CNY.

After CNY. This is still a prototype. can onlt test indoors for now cos I dont have a 12V battery and I have not made any brackets to attached it to the hood yet. Now too bz to do all these. But prelimary test is encouraging using a AC/DC adaptor.

You may like to try the sealed wet cell that's available in Sim Lim Tower. During a recent wedding session, I saw a Video photog did his own DIY flood light using the sealed batt, invertor and a few piece of low wattage energy saving bulb. And apparently it seems to work as I saw his video to be adequatly litted, even for the wedding dinner. Forget to add, according to him, the batt last quite long per charge too.

Thanks for the info, lancerck, will try that out after CNY.
