The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM is a very versatile telephoto zoom lens that Canon has offered. As the focal length speaks for itself, this lens is generally use for wildlife photography or sports (it may be too slow for some sports). But of course, you can use it for other purposes.
Specifications :
The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens is the fourth EF lens, and first L-type zoom lens, to incorporate an Image Stabilizer. The inclusion of the Image Stabilizer counteracts the effect of camera shake, providing the equivalent of a shutter speed that is two stops faster.
This lens is not very light; weighing 1,360g. One thing to note that the lens is using the push-pull zooming mechanism. A lot of people will find it quite difficult to use initially because almost all the Canon lenses are using the turning on the zoom ring. Currently, besides this lens, another lens adopted the same desing is the EF 28-300mm f3.5-5.6L IS USM. It is a matter of getting use to it after a while.
Despite that the lens is considered an old technology as it is more than 10 years old, the IQ of the lens is still pretty decent. Don't compare it with the prime lenses such as the EF 400mm f5.6L USM and EF 400mm f2.8L IS USM. These prime lenses are god-sent lenses but at the expense of price, weight and versatility.
