I have been using the EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM before the arrival of the EF 100mm f2.8L IS Macro USM lens. The latter lens is the latest Canon's technology whereby it incorporates the hybrid imagine stabilizer. Unlike the conventional imagine stabilizer, the hybrid IS compensates for both angle camera shake and shift camera shake.
Specifications :
The EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM lens is the first medium-telephoto macro lens to incorporate Hybrid IS, a new Image Stabilizer technology. In addition to a dust- and moisture-proof structure for shooting even under severe conditions, the new lens also offers a 9-blade circular aperture for beautiful, out-of-focus blurring effects for points of light, even during close-range shooting.
While the EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM features an approximate 4-shutter speed steps correction capability during normal shooting, it also realizes an approximate 3-shutter speed steps when shooting at 0.5x magnification and 2 steps at 1x. when shooting close-range. Additionally, the incorporation of a UD lens element reduces chromatic aberrations in the macro range to an absolute minimum, enabling photographic expression with high levels of resolution and contrast befitting an L-series lens.
There are a few variations of macro lenses in the market. I shall list them down accordingly. All macro allows you to shoot 1:1 magnification except the EF 50mm f2.5 (1:2) and MP-E 65mm (5:1).
EOS 7D, EF 100mm f2.8L IS Macro USM
1/250 sec, f18, ISO 200
EOS 7D, EF 100mm f2.8L IS Macro USM
1/250 sec, f18, ISO 200
The IQ of this lens is exellent. Focusing is faster than the EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM. This is mainly due to the 3 limits range to select.
Unfortunately, you are not able to use the Canon EF 1.4x / 2x TC on this lens. The only macro lens that allows you to use the EF 1.4x / 2x TC is the EF 180mm f3.5L Macro USM. However, the good news is that you are able to use the 3rd party TC such as the Kenko 1.4x TC on the EF 100mm macro lens.
Once again, Canon has spoiled us by coming with this IS and L version Macro lens. However, if you do not need the IS, then I would strongly recommend you to get the EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM at almost half of the price at $830 .
