Canon has finally launched the replacement for its flagship camera EOS 1Ds mk III. However, the new EOs 1D X is not just the replacement model for EOS 1Ds mk III, but also a speed demon that combined the EOS 1D IV. You have the best of both worlds, i.e. a full frame camera coupled with 14 fps. Did I say 14 fps? Yes, no mistake, it is the fastest camera at current technology.
At the first glance, the EOS 1D X looks very similar to 1-series. Canon strives to maintain the consistency in terms of outlook.
Besides able to shoot like a machine gun, it also incorporates some of the latest technologies by Canon. However, some of these features / technologies are long overdue.
EOS 1D X Key Highlights :
1) The AF points have increased from 45 (EOS 1D IV) to 61. Canon had lost the battle when Nikon introduced the D300, D700, D3 with 51 AF points a few years ago. Nikon did manage to capture some market shares with some breaking features such as the 51 AF points.
In the diagram above, the f2.8 high-precision diagonal cross-type points are shown in blue, while the f5.6 cross-type points are within the red box. The two purple boxes mark the location of the f4.0 cross-type points. The remaining points, shown in black, are all f5.6 horizontal types.
2) Incorporation of 2 CF card slots. Is this something new? No, Nikon has already done it some time ago with its flagship D3. Last time, Canon had 2 media card slots but one is CF while the other is SD. This can be troublesome when you need to find different types of media cards. Finally, Canon has listened to the photographers.
3) Super shooting speed of 14 fps in jpeg mode. However, such super high speed continuous shooting requires mirror lock and jpeg mode at ISO speeds less than 32,000. Nonetheless, you can shoot up to 12 fps in RAW, jpeg or combination of both without any constraints.
4) 18.1 MP. Wait a minute, isn't that lower than the 21.1 MP of EOS 1Ds mk III? I suspect that Canon is reserving the higher MP for the replacement of EOS 5D Mark II.
5) Multiple Exposures shooting. The EOS-1D X offers a multiple exposure from 2 to 9 exposures to create one multiple exposure image. Finally, Canon has incorporated this overdue feature which is already found in Nikon's DSLRs such as D300.
6) No more worrying about how to find out the shutter counts of the camera. The EOS 1D X has a system status monitor that displays the total number of shutter release cycles (in thousands).
7) ISO range is from 50 to 204,800. This is madness. Do we still a flash? The EOS 1D X has set a new standard for the industry.
8) The new image processor Digic 5 which is found in new compact cameras like S100 and SX40 IS is also found in EOS 1D X. No surprises at all. All new models will have it. It comes with a dual Digic 5 processor which boost up the processing speed 17x faster than its predecessor. No wonder it can shoot up to 14 fps. However, the most interesting part is the incorporation of a 3rd image processor Digic 4 for metering and AF control. This means that there are a total of 3 image processor found in the EOS 1D X. This has never been found any of Canon DSLRs before. It is indeed ground breaking.
9) It comes with similar LCD screen 3:2" with 1,040,000 dot resolution as the EOS 600D and EOS 60D.
10) Incorporating some of the features found in other newer Canon DSLRs like EOS 60D, 600D, i.e. Built-in chromatic aberration correction and in-camera RAW processing.
The shipment date for this new camera will be March 2012; with a suggested retail price of US$6,800. Currently, the EOS 1Ds Mark III goes at US$6,999. Hence, the price of the former will take a dive once the EOS 1D X hits the stores.
