Steve, lighting very harsh leh.. have to find a solution to our problem leh. Do you think a round florescent tube those used for car interior will be ideal? Toying with the idea of modifying one with a 12v motocycle battery pack.
Yr #2 jumping spider see stars liao.. can see thestars in its eyes..haha

No! I don’t think so florescent tube is bright enough to light up, last year I’ve try using 200 pieces of white LED lights mounted on a Bread board with 12V and still the brightness it not enough, project fail. Ahhhh……. Ya.. you did mention before using 12V car spotlight for birding, for insects I think you will fry the bugger. Nono… Hello! I am quite interested in your LED experiment:) I've never really gone into LED per se because the fixtures are still not as straightforward as my energy saving and halogens. But it's the lighting of the future so I'm moving into it. As far as I know, LEDs' lumens(the measurement for light) is not fantastic yet and usually the spotlight types require reflectors coupled with the LED itself. Which brand of LED and type were you using? I'm trying to couple LED as 'fill flash' with my deflector for version 3.0. Not sure if there is enough power. I think it is at most 1 watt worth...

Oh my god. 200 Leds. you must have spent a fortune on that. unles you are using the normal type.
he one i use is are S$1 piece.. used about 20 pieces mountes on custom made reflective surface... still fail. only bring up about 1/2 stop.
The florescent light i mention is quite bright... selling for ard RM20 in JB. (Sg more expensive) its around 6" diameter. If fix a reflector on it should be good enough. one of these day i try out. Now we know wht garyfong LS is so expensive.. he might have tested thousands of design to come up with his simple difuser. haha
No wonder yr photos lighting look harsher than before... did anyone "steals" yr difuser? check those who dont drink milk.....haha

your 2nd photo...I feel depth of field too shallow...i would prefer a deeper depth of field....more details in the fore & back legs....
The sharpness of your photos is superb...always wish my bird photographs are as sharp as your marcos...

Yes LEDs is the futures lighting for many things, is your job got anything related to lights? My setup is around 400 lumens and about 17 watt, not enough to replace my main flash for my Macro setting of ISO100 f8> 1/125s> Only good for fill in not to replace your main flash. Ultra bright white LED No brand from China, Clear,12000 MCD and 20degree view angle. There is 1 watt to 8 watt(100 lumens each) Luxeon single Led, the 8 watt Luxeon single LED maybe cost around US$60 each or more, not cost effective to build, got to wait for many years for the main stream to soak up the market before we DIY guy can buy cheap stuff. Hehe, yah I sort of see the light everyday;) China LEDs at present does not have a good rep. Known to spoil easily. But Luxeon is very good. Will find out more...
