i have mixed results using the above 2 techniques. using selective 9pts AF, my subject has the DOF i wanted but the focus i not exactly sharp as using the centrefocus+recompose. using centrefocus+recompose, it tend to have some hint of underexposure sometimes. same goes to using auto 9pt AF, i find myself focusing at the subject using the centrefocus+recompose technique again. i am just wondering, i need to shoot more, explore more and learn more any comments? care to share how u guys compose ur pics?

My young photographian, before anyone can answer your questions. Can you let us know the metering mode that you are using as well as a photo of the subject that you are shooting. First of all, using different metering modes + AF points will give you different results. Therefore, understanding the various metering modes is very important. For 30D, it has the 35 zone evaluative metering, center-weighted metering, 9% partial metering and 3.5% spot metering. Note that the evaluating metering mode is linkable to the current active AF point, while partial and spot metering modes are at the center. Secondly, the subject overall brightness / contrast plays a part too. Do note that the metering sees everything as 18% gray, so if your subject is relative high in highlight, it may give you an underexposed picture. Therefore, it would be nice if you can post a picture of the photo that you have taken.
