Many people did not read the fine print on the warranty cards. They always assume that everything will be covered by the warranty as long as it is within the warranty period.
Warranty is just like an insurance. If nothing happen to your product within the stipulated period, then your warranty will lapse. If something do happen, then it will be covered but subject to the terms and conditions.
For lenses and cameras, the warranty only covers manufactuer's defects. What are these? Simply means something caused by the manufacturer itself, e.g. AF failure when you first purchased the lens or a few months later.
Anything caused by the user is not covered, this includes mis-handling of your equipment (e.g. drop on the floor). Canon technician will diagnose the causes and will be able to determine whether it is manufacturer defects or caused by the user.
For that incident where the guy dropped the 1D mk II on the carpet and broke the PCB board, isn't that obvious whose fault is it?
Even though your lens is still under warranty, if you drop and spoil it, then you have to pay. Canon may waive off the labor charge out of goodwill but not the spare part.
On the other hand, if the faults are to due to the quality issues caused by the manufacturer, then they will repair or 1-1 exchange your products regardless of the warranty status. E.g. :
1) EF 24-105mm f4L flaring issue 2) 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS vertical format issue 3) CCD problems on P&S 4) BG-E2 contact issue
