my tamron thread size is 55mm. Im planning to get a 55-58mm step ring. So i can share the close up filters of 58mm with another lens. Will the step up ring affect focusing and quality of the pic as there is slightly more space btw the lens and filter.

Very good iboey... very intelligent question. I was asking all these type of question when doing up my setup ..
The answer is NO. As it is only mm away. But in saying that, even if it does it is not detectable.
You are right about the space in between. Hence, not all lens can use a close up filter. Take for example the EF 135mm is one lens that WILL NOT work with a close up.
Most lens will.. the tamrom you looking at WILL. But do note that because of the increase in glass.. it will affect the way you focus.
Good Luck

I have seen crazy flash setups for macros in this thread photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=142566Do i have to do that?! My tamron 90mm extends its barrel when doing very very near focusing...and im worried the barrel will cast a shadow when i fire my 580ex on top. Anyone using a tammie 90mm? would like to know yr setup

My tamron 90mm extends its barrel when doing very very near focusing...and im worried the barrel will cast a shadow when i fire my 580ex on top. Anyone using a tammie 90mm? would like to know yr setup Hahaha.. what Deswitch mention is the setup that we are currently doing.. for me I am using another setup .. not too good to mention in Canon User Forum. Though Deswitch has put in bluntly .. he has a good point that for macro lots of practice makes perfect.. I visited the link.. I am very impressed with all the ideals .. but sad to say it's all unnecessary. Pointers for Macro 1) Keep equipments as light as possible. Reason is for us (the marco kakis .. shoot hand held and in manual is the way to go) 2) Unless your hand are really shaky (don't mean to insult anyone), then you have no choice but to use a monopod. Tripod is DEFINITELY out, unless you are doing product shoot. But for insect, by the time you setup the insect might be long gone. 3) Since doing insect macro.. the equipment should be kept as compact as possible. Many a time you would have to poke your lens through left to shoot. As you mentioned, the lens is near the subject and the flash might not reach the subject as it is being blocked by the lens.. you are right .. hence the use of diffuser as mention by Deswitch. PM me your contact.. next macro outing join us and have a good feel of the setups and you will understand better. Cheers

thanx everyone for the advice. Maybe im eager to start out right rather den spending unnecessary in the long run which is why i seek advises. Its the vast different macro setups that confused me which is why i sincerely seek opinions in this forum.
To Deswitch, thank you and apologies in any ways but i shall refrain myself from posting questions like this next time.
